The city
The city’s old town is very interesting, and has a lot to offer, here are just some suggestions:
Enjoy an amazing view of the city, from one of the Saint Michael Church’s three towers. The church’s bell tower and the Saint Bravo Cathedral, home to the famous altarpiece “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” by Jan van Eyck, which is an excellent example of early Flemish art, are also a must-see.
But you could also immerse yourself in the city’s medieval history, which in many places is still very alive. The old bridge and the beautiful quays surrounding it, such as “Graslei” the herbalist’s quay and “Korenlei” the granaries’, are just some examples of this city’s immense beauty.
Not far from Graslei is the Gravensteen, the former medieval fortress was home to the counts of Flanders, and since then has become one of the city’s landmarks.
Patreshol surrounds the fortress and is home to a confusing labyrinth of narrow streets. The neighbourhood started of as a few humble homes built around a well. Today, it is the perfect place to take a walk and marvel at the wonders of modern architecture.
If you are interested in art or museums in general, you will get your money’s worth in Ghent, for example there is the “SMAK” (City Museum for Contemporary Art), the design museum, as well as the ethnographical museum, which exhibits many artefacts from early 20th century Flemish life.
And if you find the time you should definitely take a walk by the river, enjoying the setting, surrounded by numerous youngsters and students, it will be one of your fondest memories of Ghent, and one you will never forget.
