Siena (Sienna) is located in central Tuscany, and famous around the world for its unique medieval architecture. UNESCO declared the city a world heritage site in 1995.
Referred to by Romans as Saena Julia, the former Etruscan settlements were turned into a Roman colony.
Sienna was located along one of the main commercial routes to Rome, and therefore became a very important medieval town in the 10th century. In the mid-17th century Sienna became an key commercial and financial centre, and maintained favourable relationships with the Vatican, until the political pressure implemented by Tuscany, ended in confrontation with Florence.
Nowadays, Sienna has a very strong character, which surfaces at the annual “Palio dell’ Assunta” (a medieval-style horse race), jockeys start for the different “contrade senesi” (neighbourhoods), and their supporters can get quite rowdy.
What is there to do in Siena?
Let yourself be won over by the Piazza del Campo, the city’s central square is very unique. As the square used to be able to accommodate the entire population of Sienna, and therefore was the perfect venue for concerts, tournaments and bullfights. In order to accommodate the masses, the square was built in the shape of a shell.
Go to one of the most famous festivals in the world, which takes place in this very square: “Il Palio”. The festival consists of staged medieval battles and horse races between the different Sienese neighbourhoods. During the festival the city goes mad, everything is decorated with colours and the people’s excitement and passion is electrifying.

If you enjoy a glass of good wine, go to the Enoteca Italiana (a traditional wine shop), near the Fortezza Medicea, where you will be able to taste the region’s finest wines, in fact the region around Sienna has been awarded most DOCs (in line with the EU’s Protected Designation of Origin) in Italy.
