The city
Siena (Sienna) is located in central Tuscany, and famous around the world for its unique medieval architecture. UNESCO declared the city a world heritage site in 1995.
Referred to by Romans as Saena Julia, the former Etruscan settlements were turned into a Roman colony.
Sienna was located along one of the main commercial routes to Rome, and therefore became a very important medieval town in the 10th century. In the mid-17th century Sienna became an key commercial and financial centre, and maintained favourable relationships with the Vatican, until the political pressure implemented by Tuscany, ended in confrontation with Florence.
Nowadays, Sienna has a very strong character, which surfaces at the annual “Palio dell’ Assunta” (a medieval-style horse race), jockeys start for the different “contrade senesi” (neighbourhoods), and their supporters can get quite rowdy.
