The city
Stockholm is the capital and economic, political and cultural centre of Sweden. It’s built across 14 islands joined by 57 bridges. This is a city in contact with nature, especially water and fresh air, and there are no problems with congestion for its inhabitants or tourists.
Stockholm is a relatively new city, founded just 760 years ago. Despite this, it offers a wide variety of historic buildings, such as Kungliga slottet, one of the biggest palaces in Europe, hosting five museums, or the cathedral (Storkyrkan).
The Swedish capital is also characterised by its great multiculturalism. 16% of the population are immigrants, which has made it a multilingual city where German, Norwegian and French are widely spoken.
What is there to do in Stockholm?
– Visit one of the city’s most interesting areas, the Gamla Stan. Lose yourself in its charming, narrow streets and discover some of the most beautiful and curious places in the city, such as the palace, where you can watch the changing of the guard, or the main Stortorget square.
– Stockholm also boasts a large number of shops, department stores and designer boutiques, so if you like fashion, you will love shopping in the Östermalm area.
– For literature lovers, especially followers of the Millennium trilogy, we highly recommend taking the fascinating Millennium tour of Södermalm, where the plot of these famous novels unfolds. You can get to know this area by taking a guided tour, paying special interest to the places where the characters of the story live and work.
– One of the best ways to see the city is by boat. There are various trips you can take, with multilingual guides who describe the most important buildings and bridges in the city. Of course, it’s advisable to do it in the summer, as in winter, the low temperatures mean that it may not be as enjoyable.
