A brief introduction to the English language
English is a language with Germanic origins that spread to the British islands and to most of the overseas colonies that England possessed. The English language evolved from the language spoken by the Germanic tribes, who immigrated to what nowadays is known as England. A combination of dialects gave way to what is known as Old English, which largely resembles Modern Frisian.
It is currently the second most spoken language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese, and has the third most native speakers (around 341 million). English is the official language of the United States of America, the United Kingdom and 103 other countries, the majority of which are members of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
English has become the lingua franca, due to Britain’s history of colonisation, as well as the United States’ status of global power in terms of economy, science and technology, which it gained after the World Wars.
In terms of its grammar, there are four fundamental verb tenses in English: present, past, future and conditional. We can distinguish simple, continuous and compound tenses within them.
With regards to personal pronouns, the placing of a pronoun is always necessary.
English orthography was established around the 15th century, although important changes have been made since then. Vowels especially, have undergone drastic changes and as a consequence, their pronunciation is rather complicated. Hence, there are sequences of vowels, which can be pronounced in up to five different ways.
