The city

Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon and was founded by Roman settlers, who named it Caesaraugusta. Today, this town in the Ebro valley, is located half-way between Madrid and Barcelona.

On the banks of the Ebro is the Basílica del Pilar (Basilica of Our Lady of the Pilar), the city’s most important landmark. This church is the biggest Baroque house of worship in the whole of Spain, and houses some paintings of the important Aragonese painter Francisco de Goya.

The Plaza del Pilar, besides being the location of the basilica also is home to the Catedral del Salvador (San Leo Cathedral), better known as “La Seo”.

This north eastern Spanish city is the best place to try some Aragonese delicatessen, such as Teruel ham or an exquisite “ternasco” (lamb roast), both should be accompanied with a good wine from the Somontano vineyards.

What is there to do in Zaragoza?

– If you would like to walk a little, walk to the Plaza del Pilar and visit the Basílica del Pilar as well as “La Seo”.

– Go to the Palacio de la Alfarería, the current seat of the Aragonese government, the stunning palace, which will dazzle you with its Moorish features.

– La Lonja a renaissance building is currently used as the city’s exhibition space.

– But what you really should try are tapas in the “El Tubo” neighbourhood or around the Plaza de Santa Marta.
